So I Finally Got Final Fantasy XII...

So I finally got Final Fantasy XII.

So far, I'm up to Episode 3 in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

On Cellphones, Driving Anyway, and Laws

I can't find a good version of the story (so instead I'll use this video from MyFox Boston), but basically a teenager was killed in a car crash. The twist? His last words were heard from his father, who has talking with him on his cellphone at the time. According to the video I linked, it's believed that the driver dropped the cellphone, bent over to pick it up, and drove into a tree.

Now, I'm not trying to overly callous here. When I was in high school, two students in my class of about 85 were killed in a car accident. I know what it's like to see teenagers killed in car accidents. I understand that it's hard, and I definitely understand the desire to turn the death into something meaningful.

Please Don't Ask Me to Pick a Mirror

I'm sure other people have run into this, where they start to download something and are asked to pick a mirror site. Something like:

Please select a mirror:

  • foo.example.com (United States)
  • bar.example.com (United States)
  • baz.example.com (United States)
  • grue.example.com (United States)
  • zork.example.com (United States)
  • some.absurdly.long.domain.example.com (United States)
  • us1.example.com (United States)
  • us2.example.com (United States)

Well, that's great. It even helpfully suggests I pick the one closest to me. How the hell am I supposed to know which is closest?

Installing Beryl On Feisty Fawn Without the Command Line

A recent PC World article explains how to install Beryl via the command line, but since many Ubuntu users are probably more familiar with Windows, and it's possible to install it completely via a GUI, I'm going to explain how.

First, go to System, Administration, and open the Synaptic Package Manager. Your password will be requested since Synaptic requires administrative privileges. Go to Preferences and choose Repositories. The Software Sources dialog will open. (You can also open this dialog by going to System, Administration, Software Sources - but Synaptic will be required later, so I recommend just using Synaptic directly.)

How It's Scewed Up

How It's Made is a TV show demonstrating how various objects are made. It's made by a Quebec-based company, which means that much of what it shows is originally created in Quebec. (Imagine that.)

Well, those crazy rest-of-the-worlders use this funky measuring system called the "metric system" I guess. So at some point they realized that they'd have to convert to the measuring system the US uses when showing it to US audiences. So at certain points, they add an overlay which gives the measurement the narrator is giving in English units.

Comparing Supreme Commander to Total Annihilation

I recently got Supreme Commander and have proven, several times, that despite meeting the minimum requires, my computer really can't play the game. (Among other things, it's crashed half the time I've tried to play it, and one of the only games that didn't crash fell to below 1 FPS when I was attacking the enemies main base.)

So, since I can't actually play the game, I can't exactly create a review for it. Instead, I'm going to compare it to Total Annihilation, since Supreme Commander is TA's "spiritual successor."

First off, unit types. TA had four unit types: KBots, vehicles (tanks), airplanes, and ships. (This was later expanded to include hovercraft.) SC simplifies this to three: land, air, and water. While there are no units called kbots, all three factions have large walking robots (excluding the Commander, of course). So there's a smaller collection of units to contend with, and most units take on roles similar to TA: anti-air, anti-land, anti-water, anti-base, and others.

Items In The Wrong Cases

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's when people put things back (specifically, movies or games) in the wrong case.

If there's one thing worse than that, it's discovering that I've done it.

Open up the Trauma Center: Under The Knife case, and discover Final Fantasy III. Pop open Final Fantasy III's case, and it, of course, contains Animal Crossing: Wild World. So what did Animal Crossing: Wild World contain? Well... nothing.

So now all the games are back in their proper cases, and Trauma Center: Under The Knife remains safely in the DS.

Katamari Pepsi

Anyone else see the new Pepsi pinball ad and think "Katamari Peh-eppp-siii, ii, iiI, ba ba, baaa ba baba ba baaa ba, ba ba ba ba, baa ba, bum ba baba ba, bum baba ba!..."

...Anyone?

The Noob Comic

I just read through the archives for The Noob. It's basically pure MMORPG humor - so if you're not an MMORPG player, you probably won't find it funny.

Might get moved to the webcomics page some day, but for now, I'm just basically dumping the link into my archives. :)
